Carnegie Center for Art & History

The Carnegie Center for Art & History is an art gallery and local history museum in New Albany, IN. The center has more than 5,000 items. The Carnegie Center has two permanent displays: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage: Men and Women of the Underground Railroad and Remembered: The Life of Lucy Higgs Nichols. 

Built in 1904, the building was a library until 1969. It became the Floyd County Museum in 1971. It was renovated in 1998 and the name was changed to The Carnegie Center. The center is part of the Floyd County Public Library. Admission to The Carnegie Center is free. 

Sam Peden Community Park in New Albany, IN

Sam Peden Community Park is a 100-acre county park located in New Albany, IN. The park has a wide variety of sports facilities including basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, and a sand volleyball court. Spend some time in nature and relax from the busy city life! 

There’s a path for walking and biking, pets are welcomed if they are leashed. Visitors can fish in Kiwanis Lake, the lake is stocked with channel catfish and other native species. 

The park is named after Sam Peden, a past director of the Floyd County Parks and Rec Department. The park is open 6:00 AM to 10:30 PM. 

Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site

Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site is a historical site in New Albany, IN. It was built in 1867-1869 as the home of William Culbertson, a wealthy businessman. The mansion is 20,000 sq. ft. and has 25 rooms. 

The house became a historical site in 1976. Visitors can tour the lavish house equipped with hand-painted ceilings and marble fireplaces. In October 1987, the staff transformed the mansion into a haunted house for Halloween and have continued the tradition ever since. Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site is managed by the Indiana State Museum.
